Iran's quest for a historic World Cup knockout stage appearance ended in heartbreak on Saturday. The team was eliminated after a last-gasp equalizer in another Group G match.
Iran had finished their own group campaign with three draws. They needed a specific result from the Austria-Algeria game to advance as one of the best third-placed teams. For a brief moment, it seemed possible when Algeria took a late lead.
But Austria scored with almost the final kick to secure a 3-3 draw. That result sent both Austria and Algeria through and left Iran on the outside.
The elimination was especially painful given Iran's challenging tournament circumstances. Off-field issues, including visa uncertainties and geopolitical tensions, forced the team to commute from Mexico to the United States for their matches.
U.S. authorities imposed strict entry requirements, limiting their stay before games. Captain Mehdi Taremi previously called the logistics a "disaster" and questioned if the team was truly welcome.
Iran leaves the tournament unbeaten but heartbroken, denied by the finest of margins on the pitch.
