Canada's Olympic chief, David Shoemaker, is urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to increase sports funding, citing a shortfall in medal targets at the recent Winter Games. Canada aimed to exceed its 26 medals from Beijing 2022 but is projected to finish with 21 at most.

Shoemaker emphasized that while sport isn't the sole priority, it's integral to national strength and values. "Sport is an integral part of that strength of character and country," he stated.

Despite hopes for a $144 million funding boost, the federal budget offered no new money for sports organizations. "Core funding for national sports organizations has not increased in 20 years," Shoemaker explained, noting this impacts operations, athletes, and coaches.

Canada's performance lagged behind its best-ever haul of 29 medals in Pyeongchang 2018. Jennifer Heil, Canada's chef de mission, warned that stagnant funding in an inflationary economy effectively constitutes a cut, risking a "pay-to-play system."

Despite the medal count, Canada's hockey teams reached gold medal games, highlighting strong national interest. Shoemaker believes the desire for such iconic moments reflects a deeper patriotism and aspiration to excel globally. The nation's first gold medal arrived late in the Games, prompting calls for a more serious approach to achieving better results.
