HOUSTON, Texas: Cape Verde, a small island nation, has qualified for the World Cup knockout stages in their tournament debut. Grouped with Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia, the team advanced with three draws to finish second in Group H.
Coach Bubista emphasized belief and hard work as keys to their success. The team, nicknamed the Blue Sharks, held European champions Spain to a 0-0 draw in their opening match.

Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha made seven saves in that match, becoming the oldest goalkeeper in tournament history to keep a clean sheet on debut. The team then drew 2-2 with two-time champions Uruguay.

With over 150,000 inhabitants, Cape Verde is the smallest country ever to qualify. Coach Bubista stated football belongs to everyone, including poor nations, and hopes their success serves as a model for others. The squad includes players from diaspora communities, united by shared language and culture.
The team now faces reigning champion Argentina in the knockout round.
