England opener Ben Duckett has withdrawn from the Indian Premier League just days before the tournament begins, citing a commitment to his international career. The move could result in a two-season ban under IPL rules.

Duckett, 31, was purchased by Delhi Capitals for 20 million rupees ($213,167) in the auction. He scored 202 runs during the Ashes series at an average of 20.20.

Under league regulations, players who register, get picked, and then withdraw before the season may be barred from the IPL and future auctions for two seasons.

"Representing England is something I have dreamed of since I was a child," Duckett said in a statement. "I need to ensure I am in the best possible place physically and mentally ahead of the summer."

He apologized to Delhi Capitals, the franchise's staff, and fans, acknowledging the disruption caused by his decision.

The IPL runs from March 28 to May 31.
