Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during Denmark's international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, but the 34-year-old midfielder was conscious and alert, according to the Danish Football Federation.
"Christian Eriksen is conscious and is doing well under the circumstances," the federation posted on X, adding that the match was called off.
It was a chilling repeat of the 2021 incident when Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark's Euro 2020 opener against Finland. At that time he received life-saving CPR and was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD), which allowed him to continue his professional career.
Around the 65th minute on Sunday, Eriksen went down, and teammates from both Denmark and Ukraine quickly formed a protective circle as medical staff attended to him. He was able to walk to the ambulance.
Danish team doctor Morten Boesen said the pacemaker appeared to work as intended. "He was briefly gone, but very quickly regained consciousness," Boesen told Danish media. Eriksen is now undergoing hospital evaluation to determine the cause of the episode.
At the time of the abandonment, Denmark was leading Ukraine 2-1.
