Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces have forced Russia to completely halt shipping in the Sea of Azov. A week-long campaign of drone strikes against Russian tankers and vessels forced the closure of the key maritime corridor from the Don River to the Black Sea.
The shutdown cuts off vital seaborne fuel deliveries to the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula, which was already suffering rationing. The strikes are part of a broader Ukrainian campaign targeting Russian energy infrastructure, leaving damaged refineries and burned-out trucks in its wake.
The disruption impacts a major Russian grain export route, affecting about one-quarter of its shipments and causing global wheat prices to rise. Russia is the world's largest grain exporter.
The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington, D.C., think tank, stated the strikes represent a new phase in Ukraine's effort to isolate occupied Crimea and disrupt Russian logistics, particularly for petroleum and grain.
Video evidence from Ukrainian drones and satellite imagery confirm the strikes, showing burning ships in the Sea of Azov.
