Dave McGinnis, a former NFL head coach for the Arizona Cardinals and an assistant coach for the Tennessee Titans, died Monday at age 74. He had been hospitalized for an illness.

McGinnis served as the Cardinals' defensive coordinator before taking on interim head coaching duties in 2000 and then holding the head coaching position from 2001 to 2003. He compiled a 17-40 record with the team.

He later joined the Titans as a linebackers coach under Jeff Fisher, eventually becoming assistant head coach until 2011. Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk remembered him as "family" and praised his passion and loyalty. Cardinals owner Michael Bidwell called McGinnis a "ball coach" who "truly loved the game."

McGinnis's coaching career began in college in 1973 before he entered the NFL with the Chicago Bears in 1986. He also held roles with the Rams.

After his coaching career, McGinnis returned to Nashville in 2017 as a color announcer for Titans Radio.
