Belgium's Royal Football Association is formally challenging FIFA's decision to suspend USA star Folarin Balogun's red card ban. The federation is requesting a full explanation and a match report from FIFA's officiating body.
FIFA lifted the suspension on Sunday, reportedly the first such reversal since 1962. Balogun received the red card for stepping on an opponent's ankle after a VAR review.
Belgium's coach, Rudi Garcia, mocked the ruling. "I didn't know that in the offices of FIFA the fifth of July was the first of April in Europe," he said.
The decision comes after U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review. FIFA stated the suspension is now under a one-year probationary period.
U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino supported the move, stating his team was punished unfairly during the match. The U.S. and Belgium are set to meet in the Round of 16 in Seattle.
