Canadian midfielder Marcelo Flores will miss the World Cup after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the Concacaf Champions Cup final on Saturday.
Flores, 22, was playing for Tigres UANL when he collapsed without contact in the 77th minute, clutching his right leg before leaving the field in tears.
He confirmed the injury on social media: "My ACL is gone."
Canada coach Jesse Marsch told reporters Sunday the team is devastated. Marsch had named Flores to his 26-man World Cup squad just two days earlier, alongside Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies, who is also regaining match fitness.
Flores was born in Canada to a Mexican father, making him eligible for both nations. He switched his international allegiance to Canada earlier this year and recently played against Iceland and Tunisia.
Canada opens its World Cup campaign on June 12 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto.
