Famed sports agent Leigh Steinberg stated that quarterback Fernando Mendoza has the leadership, maturity, and physical tools to help revive the Las Vegas Raiders. Steinberg believes Mendoza, who led Indiana to an undefeated season and national championship, has the qualities to be a foundational franchise quarterback for a decade.
"The key to winning in football today starts with the franchise quarterback," Steinberg told Reuters. "And Mendoza is someone a team can build around."
He praised Mendoza's size, arm strength, accuracy, and poise under pressure, noting his track record of leading late scoring drives. Steinberg also highlighted the Heisman Trophy winner's "preternaturally mature" character and leadership, while acknowledging that even highly drafted quarterbacks require support to adjust to the professional game.
If selected by the Raiders, Mendoza's pick could mark the start of a new chapter for the team. Steinberg suggested that the Raiders' rebuilding efforts might be viewed as beginning with Mendoza's draft selection.
Mendoza will not attend the draft in person due to a desire to remain close to his family. This year's draft is expected to feature strong defensive pass rushers, offensive linemen, and wide receivers, with fewer quarterback-centric prospects compared to recent years.
