Colin Cowherd declared the Dallas Cowboys made the best first-round selection in the NFL Draft by picking Ohio State safety Caleb Downs.
Downs, considered a top prospect, slid to No. 11 overall, surprising many. Cowherd believes Downs is not only a great player but the steal of the draft, comparing him to Hall of Famer Ed Reed.
"You cannot do better than what the Dallas Cowboys did with their first pick," Cowherd stated on his show. "I think he’s going to be the best Buckeye in the draft. … I think he’s an incredible Ed Reed-level player."
Downs recorded 68 tackles, 45 solo, with two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and a sack in his junior season. While not the most athletic tester, his reputation is built on instincts, anticipation, and a high football IQ. Cowherd emphasized Downs' blend of production, instincts, and versatility makes him a rare defensive addition capable of immediately impacting a secondary.
Cowherd also defended the Cowboys' second first-round pick, UCF defensive end Malachi Lawrence, despite some analysts viewing him as a potential second-round selection. Cowherd suggested Lawrence is a developmental pick, fitting the team's strategy of acquiring multiple defensive players.
The Cowboys continued to bolster their defense throughout the draft, selecting edge rusher Jaishawn Barham, cornerback Devin Moore, and defensive tackle LT Overton.
