ARLINGTON, TX - France coach Didier Deschamps conceded his team was outclassed in every key area after Spain dismantled them 2-0 in Tuesday's World Cup semi-final.
France, a pre-tournament favorite, were second best throughout. Spain controlled midfield, neutralized star Kylian Mbappe, and punished a series of French technical and tactical errors.
"Obviously, this Spain team are very strong and they proved it tonight," Deschamps said. "We were slightly below our usual level and made more technical mistakes. We were also a step short physically."
The French attack, featuring Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise alongside Mbappe, was effectively shut down. Deschamps noted Spain's superior ability to read passing lanes and intercept attacks prevented any French rhythm.
"We know the quality Spain possess, and to have any chance we needed to be at our absolute best. We were not," the coach stated.
The defeat ends France's quest for a third World Cup title. The team will now play in Saturday's third-place playoff against either England or Argentina.
Deschamps also questioned the refereeing standard, asking if the match official was at the required level for a World Cup semi-final.
