FIFA President Gianni Infantino remains confident that scheduled World Cup games will proceed in Mexico this summer, despite escalating cartel violence.
The sentiment comes in the wake of the death of Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera Cervantes, Mexico's most-wanted fentanyl kingpin, leading to widespread violence across the country.
Infantino stated he has "full confidence" in the matches, including those in Guadalajara, a city heavily impacted by cartel activity. Mexico is scheduled to host 13 matches in total, with games set to begin in June.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum echoed this confidence, assuring "every guarantee" that the World Cup will proceed without risk to attendees. FIFA is reportedly monitoring the situation and maintaining contact with Mexican authorities.
