FIFA Revokes Commentator’s Credentials After On-Air Outburst

Paraguay defeated Turkey 1-0 in a World Cup group stage match, but the story off the pitch overshadowed the result. Commentator Jorge Vera, known as Chipi Vera, was stripped of his media credentials after a blistering on-air tirade.

Vera called the referee a “thief” and accused FIFA of “killing football” following a controversial red card issued to Paraguayan star Miguel Almiron. He also criticized FIFA president Gianni Infantino. FIFA moved swiftly to revoke his access for the remainder of the tournament.

Almiron was sent off for covering his mouth during an exchange with a Turkish player-a decision that immediately drew scrutiny. The red card not only sparked Vera’s outburst but will also force Almiron to miss Paraguay’s next match.

FIFA has not announced any sanctions beyond the World Cup ban, and Vera has not appealed. The incident raises questions about media freedom at the tournament.
