Paraguay shocked four-time World Cup champion Germany in the round of 32 Monday, advancing 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Boston Stadium.

Julio Enciso gave Paraguay a first-half lead with a header in the 42nd minute. Germany equalized in the 54th minute when Kai Havertz scored on a header.

Germany dominated possession but victory was stripped away in extra time. Jonathan Tah's header was disallowed after a VAR review determined Waldemar Anton obstructed goalkeeper Orlando Gill. The score remained locked.

The shootout proved historic. Germany’s Havertz and Nick Woltemade had attempts saved by Gill. Paraguay missed a chance to win it in the fifth round when Manuel Neuer saved Fabián Balbuena's shot. In sudden death, Germany’s Tah blasted his penalty over the bar. José Canale then converted, sending Paraguay to the round of 16 and marking the first time Germany has ever lost a World Cup penalty shootout.

Paraguay will face the winner of France versus Sweden.
