The German Football Association, the DFB, has completed initial discussions in New York with coach Jürgen Klopp about becoming the next national team manager.

In a statement, the DFB said President Bernd Neuendorf and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke held a "constructive exchange" where key terms of a potential contract were understood. Talks are scheduled to continue next week.

Any final agreement would require approval from Red Bull, where Klopp serves as Global Head of Soccer. The appointment would also need final approval from the DFB's governance bodies.

The move follows Germany's disappointing exit in the Round of 32 at the recent World Cup, a third consecutive poor tournament result. Julian Nagelsmann departed after the loss to Paraguay.

Klopp, who led Liverpool to Champions League and Premier League titles, is the preferred choice of German fans. He previously won domestic honors with Borussia Dortmund.
