Golden Tempo captured the 152nd Kentucky Derby on Saturday, making history for female trainers. The 3-year-old bay thoroughbred colt charged down the final stretch to give trainer Cherie DeVaux her first Triple Crown race victory. She became the first female trainer to ever win the Kentucky Derby and just the second to win any Triple Crown race.

"I don't even have any words right now," an emotional DeVaux said on the NBC broadcast after upsetting early favorite Renegade.

The field was reduced to 19 early Saturday after The Puma was scratched due to a skin infection. Silent Tactic, Fulleffort, and Right to Party were also scratched in the last four days but were replaced. Just before race time, Great White was scratched after flipping over as horses were loading, leaving 18 runners.

Track conditions were fast at Churchill Downs, a stark contrast to last year's muddy race. Temperatures were 54 degrees at post time, well below the average high of 74, making it one of the coldest Derbies on record.
