Gheorghe Hagi has been appointed as the new head coach of the Romania national football team. The 61-year-old legend begins his second tenure 25 years after his first spell.
Hagi, famed as the "Maradona of the Carpathians," replaces Mircea Lucescu. He brings extensive experience, having made 124 appearances for Romania and scoring 35 goals, making him a joint all-time leading scorer. His decorated playing career included stints with Steaua Bucharest, Real Madrid, and Barcelona.
The Romania Football Federation announced Hagi has signed a contract covering the Euro 2028 and World Cup 2030 qualification cycles. Romania's immediate fixtures include friendlies against Georgia and Wales in June, followed by their Nations League B campaign in September.
