McLaren driver Oscar Piastri's Australian Grand Prix ended before it started on Sunday. The hometown hero crashed on a reconnaissance lap at Albert Park after losing control on an exit kerb. The incident damaged his car's right front wheel, front wing, and nose.

Piastri, who qualified fifth, stated he was blindsided by an unexpected surge in torque but also accepted personal responsibility. He noted cold tires and the kerb as contributing factors, alongside an unexpected 100kW power increase.

McLaren boss Zak Brown called the incident a "disappointing burp" for Piastri at his home race, expressing confidence in the driver's ability to recover.
