INGLEWOOD, California - Iran twice fought back from a goal down to secure a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in a Group G World Cup match overshadowed by political tension at Los Angeles Stadium on Monday.
New Zealand struck first when Elijah Just volleyed home a Chris Wood setup. The goal was cheered by Iranian government critics waving the pre-revolutionary Lion and Sun flag, while some booed Iran's national anthem.
Yet the majority of the 70,000-strong crowd backed Team Melli, roaring when Ramin Rezaeian equalized after pouncing on a blocked shot. Wood and Just combined again for New Zealand’s second, but Mohammad Mohebbi headed in Rezaeian’s cross to level the match at 2-2.
"This is for my people in Iran," Rezaeian said.
The stalemate leaves all Group G teams on one point after Belgium drew 1-1 with Egypt. New Zealand remains winless in World Cup history after seven matches.
Before kickoff, hundreds protested outside the stadium. Los Angeles houses the world’s largest Iranian diaspora, and the match exposed deep divisions over attending the game. Iran’s team has been based in Tijuana after relocating from Arizona.
Coach Amir Ghalenoei called his squad "the most oppressed" in the tournament, citing travel demands and visa denials preventing federation officials from entering the United States.
Iran next faces Belgium in Los Angeles, while New Zealand takes on Egypt in Vancouver.
