Iran's sports and youth minister has declared that it is "not possible" for the country to participate in the upcoming World Cup, co-hosted by Canada, the US, and Mexico. Minister Ahmad Donyamali cited "wicked acts" by the US, including imposing two wars and causing thousands of casualties, as the reason for his country's withdrawal.

Iran was scheduled to play matches in Inglewood, California, and Seattle. However, FIFA stated it anticipates Iran's national team will be allowed to compete.

Following discussions with President Donald Trump, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that Trump reiterated Iran's welcome to participate in the tournament in the United States.
