James Deffinbaugh, a former champion in the 105kg category and a veteran of strongman competitions, is reshaping the sport beyond his athletic achievements. Deffinbaugh, who transitioned from an IT career, has pioneered new competition apparatus, including the Ukrainian Deadlift and Power Stairs, which allow for dynamic weight and height adjustments. This innovation reflects his strategic use of past professional skills to enhance athlete challenges and fan engagement.
He also owns Spider Strength Gym in Raleigh, NC, a facility that has produced numerous strongman athletes. Deffinbaugh is also the mastermind behind Spider Tack, a grip support product that gained widespread use, including by professional baseball players, leading to unexpected public attention.

As owner and CEO of Strongman Corporation, Deffinbaugh leads one of America's foundational strongman organizations. The corporation supports major events like the Arnold Strongman World Championships and hosts competitions across numerous states and countries, championing inclusivity through various weight divisions and age categories. He is instrumental in the World's Strongest Firefighter (WSFF) competition, a unique event that raises funds for firefighters and fosters a strong community.

For the 2026 season, the WSFF will feature divisional championships and Masters classes, culminating in a finals event that includes a firetruck pull, showcasing the grit and passion of athletes and heroes alike.
