UFC veteran Jim Miller marked an emotional return to the Octagon Saturday night, securing a first-round submission victory over Jared Gordon at UFC 328 in Newark, New Jersey.

Miller had not fought in over a year, staying by the side of his 14-year-old son, Wyatt, who was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma-a rare soft tissue cancer-last year.

“My son went through some really difficult times in the last couple of months,” Miller said after the fight. “He ended up kicking the s--- out of cancer, and he’s all good today. We are cancer free.”

Miller, a Sparta, New Jersey native, won the lightweight bout via guillotine choke in the first round. The victory extends his record for most wins in UFC history to 28.
