PARIS - Mirra Andreeva became the youngest French Open champion in over three decades on Saturday, sweeping aside surprise finalist Maja Chwalinska 6-3 6-2 on a blustery Court Philippe Chatrier.
The 19-year-old Russian is the youngest Roland Garros women's singles winner since Monica Seles won her third straight title in 1992 at age 18. Andreeva overcame a jittery start to claim her maiden Grand Slam crown.
World number 114 Chwalinska, who captivated with her tactical intelligence during a nine-match winning run that began in qualifying, struggled to settle on the big stage. The Pole's trademark drop shots and changes of pace yielded diminishing returns as Andreeva found her range.
After an error-filled opening set, Andreeva broke decisively for 4-3, then surged to a 4-0 lead in the second before sealing victory with a crosscourt backhand winner. Andreeva is the first teenager to lift the Suzanne Lenglen Cup since Iga Swiatek in 2020.
