Kenya's Albert Korir, winner of the 2021 New York Marathon, has been banned for five years by the Athletics Integrity Unit for doping.
The 31-year-old admitted to violations after testing positive for the prohibited substance CERA in three out-of-competition tests last October. The sanction was increased from four years due to aggravating circumstances, but reduced by one year for his early admission.
Korir will retain his 2021 title but was stripped of his third-place finish in the 2023 New York Marathon. His ban is effective until January 2031.
The case highlights ongoing doping challenges in marathon running, particularly in Kenya, a nation renowned for its distance runners.
