Mirra Andreeva, a 19-year-old Russian tennis prodigy, captured her first Grand Slam title on Saturday at the French Open, defeating Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2.
Andreeva becomes the youngest women's singles champion since Monica Seles won the tournament in 1992 at age 18. She is also the first Russian woman to win a major since Maria Sharapova's 2014 French Open victory and the first teenager to claim a Grand Slam since Coco Gauff won the 2023 US Open.
Ranked 114th, Chwalinska was attempting to become the first qualifier to win Roland Garros. After the match was tied 3-3 in the first set, Andreeva won 20 of the next 21 points to take control. She sealed the victory with a backhand cross-court winner before dropping to her knees on the clay.
During the trophy ceremony, Andreeva thanked herself for fighting 'so many demons,' adding, 'Only I know how tough it was for me. How nervous I was throughout these two weeks.'
