John Sterling, the legendary New York Yankees radio broadcaster, died at 87 on Monday. That same day, his iconic victory call echoed through Yankee Stadium after the Yanks beat the Baltimore Orioles 12-1.
"Ballgame over! Yankees win! Theee Yankees win!" played over the speakers before Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York."
Captain Aaron Judge says he'd like that call to be a permanent post-win tradition.
"I think it'd be a nice little tip of the cap to John and what he meant - so much to this franchise and this fan base. I think it would be pretty cool," Judge said.
Judge hit his MLB-leading 14th home run in the first inning and said he chuckled thinking about what Sterling would have said.
Manager Aaron Boone wholeheartedly supports the idea. Boone has already been shouting the call in the dugout for a couple of years. He was happy Sterling's voice drowned him out after Monday's win.
Sterling began broadcasting in 1989, covering over 5,000 games. He retired in 2024 after the Yankees' World Series run and had been in poor health since suffering a heart attack in January.
