Mexican national team goalkeeper Luis Angel Malagon will miss the 2026 World Cup after tearing his left Achilles tendon. The injury occurred during Tuesday's Concacaf Champions Cup game against the Philadelphia Union, Club America announced Wednesday. Malagon, widely considered the probable starter for one of the host nations, requires surgery.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper sustained the injury in the 37th minute of Club America's 1-0 victory. He had been a key player for the national team since 2023, helping secure the 2024-25 Concacaf Nations League and the Concacaf Gold Cup, earning best goalkeeper honors in both. He also received the best goalkeeper award for the 2023-24 Liga MX campaign.
In Malagon's absence, the starting goalkeeper position for Mexico will be contested by Raul 'Tala' Rangel, Carlos Acevedo, and veteran Guillermo Ochoa.
