A historic gold medal from Canada's 1952 Olympic men's hockey victory is among hundreds of pieces of memorabilia currently up for auction, with bidding set to close soon.
The medal belonged to William "Billy" Gibson, a forward for the Edmonton Mercurys. Gibson was instrumental in Canada's gold medal win at the Oslo, Norway Winter Olympics, scoring 15 goals and recording seven assists in just eight games. His performance made him the tournament's leading point scorer.
This victory marked Canada's last men's hockey gold medal for 50 years, until the team won again in 2002. Gibson's son, Darin, described the medal as the "crowning achievement" of his father's amateur career.

The Gibson family has held onto the medal and other memorabilia for nearly two decades since Billy Gibson's passing in 2006. After considerable deliberation, they decided to part with the historic item.
Initially expected to fetch around $40,000, the current highest bid for the gold medal stood at $7,150 as of Thursday afternoon, with only three bids placed. Auction officials note that the unique status of Gibson as the tournament's top scorer could make this medal a rare find.
