NBA legend Magic Johnson is calling on fans worldwide to make Los Angeles their destination for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, declaring the city the "sports capital of the world."

Speaking at a '30 Days to FIFA World Cup 2026' event at SoFi Stadium, Johnson urged visitors to experience more than just matches.

"The world game is coming to the greatest city in the world," said Johnson, a five-time NBA champion. He noted LA would host not only the World Cup but also the Super Bowl and the 2028 Olympics.

The city will stage eight matches including the US opening ceremony on June 12 featuring Katy Perry. Teams playing in LA include the United States, Paraguay, Iran, New Zealand, Switzerland, Bosnia, Belgium, and Turkey.

Kathryn Schloessman, President of the LA Sports and Entertainment Commission, promised a "giant soccer carnival" across the city. Affordable public transit options, including $1.75 stadium tickets, contrast with costly East Coast venues.

Critics raised concerns over homelessness, poverty, and taxpayer costs, warning vulnerable residents could face price increases and service disruptions.
