In a stunning display of grit and composure, 17-year-old Moise Kouame became the fifth-youngest man to reach the third round of a Grand Slam since 1968. The French wildcard, ranked 318th in the world, defeated Paraguay's Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6(8) in a gripping clash lasting nearly five hours.
After seizing a two-set lead, Kouame faced a fierce fightback from Vallejo, who forced a decisive fifth set. The young Frenchman rallied, breaking back late to secure the win on his first match point with a daring serve-and-volley. "Without you I would never have made it," Kouame told the roaring crowd on Court Suzanne Lenglen.
Kouame now faces world number 36 Alejandro Tabilo of Chile in the next round.
