Arsenal defender Jurriën Timber has been ruled out of the Netherlands’ 2026 World Cup squad due to a persistent groin injury. The Dutch Football Association confirmed his withdrawal on June 9, replacing him with Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida.
This decision comes just days before the tournament begins. FIFA regulations permit injury-related substitutions up to 24 hours prior to the opening match, a window the Netherlands utilized effectively. Timber had recently returned to action for Arsenal, making his initial inclusion in the provisional squad appear viable. However, the injury proved too stubborn to manage within the tight timeline.
Jeremie Frimpong was also excluded from the final roster due to injury concerns. With key defensive options diminished, Geertruida now faces immediate pressure to perform in a tournament hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Despite these setbacks, the Netherlands retains significant strength elsewhere. Captain Virgil van Dijk returns to the fold after recovering from his own injury, alongside Memphis Depay, who is back following a thigh issue. The expanded 48-team format demands deep squad rotation, placing additional importance on every selected player.
The Netherlands finalized their 26-man roster in late May, holding fitness calls until the last moment. While Timber’s bid failed, the core leadership remains intact as the team prepares for global competition.
