Shohei Ohtani launched a second-inning grand slam, igniting Samurai Japan's dominant 13-0 rout over Chinese Taipei in their World Baseball Classic opener on Friday.
Fans at Tokyo Dome erupted as Ohtani connected with a curveball, sending it over the right-field wall. Japan secured the win under the mercy rule after the seventh inning.
"I know there will be some tough battles ahead, but if the fans and the team can unite and everyone can help build the excitement together, it will really encourage us," Ohtani stated post-game.
The World Baseball Classic, a showcase of national pride, features Japan aiming for their fourth championship. Ohtani, a national hero, returns to Japan after his second consecutive MLB World Series title with the Los Angeles Dodgers and his third MVP award.
Dodger teammate Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings for Japan, who next face South Korea. Chinese Taipei, now 0-2, will play Czechia.
Japan, the defending champions, are competing in Pool C. The tournament runs from March 5-17 across multiple international venues.
Ohtani, 31, is expected to serve as designated hitter for Japan, with the Dodgers prioritizing his arm recovery after second elbow surgery. He is renowned as the first pitching-batting dual threat since Babe Ruth.
Despite Ohtani not pitching, Japan boasts a strong roster, including eight Major Leaguers from both MLB and Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball organization.
Streaming giant Netflix has acquired domestic broadcasting rights for all 47 WBC games in Japan, reportedly paying significantly more than for previous events, and is hosting public viewing events.
