World heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk is defending his choice to fight Dutch kickboxer Rico Verhoeven, stating he wants to pursue his own desires for once. Usyk, who holds the IBF, WBA, and WBC titles, has not competed in boxing since last July. He is set to face Verhoeven on May 23 in Egypt.
Usyk acknowledged criticism but emphasized his personal motivation for the bout. "One time I want to do what I want, not what I need," Usyk told reporters. "Now I do what I want."
Verhoeven, a decorated kickboxer with limited professional boxing experience, believes his significant weight advantage will be a deciding factor in the fight.
