Projected top NFL Draft quarterback Fernando Mendoza has reportedly decided against attending the upcoming NFL Draft. The 22-year-old quarterback chose to remain in Miami with his family rather than travel to Pittsburgh for the event. This decision mirrors that of Trevor Lawrence in 2021, who also did not attend the draft before being selected first overall.

Mendoza's choice may be influenced by his mother's ongoing battle with multiple sclerosis. She has lived with the condition for over 15 years and currently uses a wheelchair.

Mendoza has been widely projected as the top selection in this year's draft, particularly after leading an undefeated Indiana team to a national championship. Last season, he completed 72% of his passes for 3,535 yards, with 41 touchdowns and six interceptions, leading all Division I quarterbacks in touchdown passes.

The Las Vegas Raiders, who hold the first overall pick, met with Mendoza on Tuesday. While the Raiders are expected to select him, his immediate starting role is not guaranteed. The team recently signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, who has prior working relationships with new head coach Klint Kubiak.

The Raiders organization aims for Mendoza to eventually become the face of their franchise, regardless of when he takes the starting position.
