Patrick Mahomes took a major step in his recovery Thursday, participating in Kansas City Chiefs OTAs with a heavy knee brace. The two-time NFL MVP threw passes during 7-on-7 drills, connecting with wide receiver Xavier Worthy for a touchdown.

Mahomes is roughly five months removed from surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL. The injury cut short Kansas City's playoff streak in Week 15 last season.

While Mahomes did not participate in 11-on-11 drills, head coach Andy Reid praised the quarterback's work ethic, saying he "busted his tail" to get back. Mahomes acknowledged the challenge but said he still aims to be ready for the season opener against the Denver Broncos on September 14.

"That's always going to be the goal," Mahomes said. "I don't want to miss games."

Mahomes has resumed throwing but has not yet fully ramped up his running. He insisted he will not change his playing style, saying he will still "lay it on the line" for his teammates.
