The Prairies Premier League (PPL) launched its inaugural games on Sunday in Saskatoon and Winnipeg, marking a milestone for soccer development in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. This new semi-professional league brings together clubs from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and northwestern Ontario, filling a critical gap in the player pathway for the region.

“It’s one more step in the pathway that we want to provide for aspiring players on the Prairies,” said Steven Porter, executive director of the Saskatchewan Soccer Association. The league has been three years in the making, following an attempted launch in 2023. It currently meets the threshold of six teams in both the men's and women's divisions.

Cole Joslyn, a Saskatoon native, highlighted the local impact: “It’s a great opportunity, not just for me but the next generations. It means an easier pathway to that pro level.” In the opening match in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Excel defeated Forza Soccer Academy 5-1.
