George Russell claimed pole position for Mercedes at the Formula One season opener in Melbourne, with teammate Kimi Antonelli locking up the front row. The surprise qualifying sweep came as Red Bull's Max Verstappen crashed out in the first session.
Russell posted a lap of 1:18.518, leading Antonelli by 0.293 seconds. This marks Mercedes' first pole in Melbourne since 2019. "It really came alive this afternoon," Russell stated, expressing happiness for Antonelli's strong performance.
Antonelli's promising result faces scrutiny as stewards investigate an incident involving debris on track, which caused a red flag in Q3. Red Bull's Isack Hadjar will start third, followed by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen's qualifying session ended abruptly when he locked up and crashed into the barrier on his first flying lap. The four-time world champion, who was runner-up last year, will start from the back of the grid, depending on repairs.
Other notable eliminations in Q1 included Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and both Cadillac drivers, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas. Lance Stroll and Carlos Sainz also missed qualifying due to car rebuilds and timing issues.
