Emma Raducanu, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, revealed she enjoys periods of anonymity by adopting a persona named "Ella." This allows her to experience normal interactions, like a recent encounter at a coffee shop.
"Sometimes I love getting to know people and pretending I'm someone completely different and making up a story," Raducanu told reporters at Indian Wells. She stated she often uses the name "Ella," a slight variation of her own, and fabricates a story about visiting friends.
On the court, the 25th-seeded Raducanu delivered a commanding performance, defeating qualifier Anastasia Zakharova 6-1, 6-3 in under 90 minutes. This win aims to rebound from recent early-round exits in Qatar and Dubai.
Raducanu also discussed recent coaching changes, including a reunion with Mark Petchey in an informal role. She expressed a desire for coaching that allows her to maintain her instinctive playing style, emphasizing the importance of freedom for self-expression on the court.
