Rory McIlroy's commanding six-shot lead at the Masters evaporated Saturday, undone by a difficult passage through Amen Corner. The Northern Irishman, who held the largest 36-hole lead in Masters history, faltered on the 11th and 12th holes, dropping shots and allowing competitors to close the gap.
Despite regaining the lead with birdies on 14 and 15, a bogey on the 17th left McIlroy facing a tight contest for Sunday's final round. He will aim to become the fourth repeat Masters champion, a feat not seen since Tiger Woods in 2001-2002. McIlroy acknowledged the need for improved performance, stating he must be better to secure a win. Having previously won the Masters in 2022, McIlroy believes his past victory will allow him to play with greater freedom.
Cameron Young, who began the day eight shots back, is now level with McIlroy heading into the final day.
