Spain captain Rodri has described feeling "shocked" after leading his country to 2026 World Cup victory in North America, a triumph made more poignant by his comeback from a major knee injury.
The Manchester City midfielder, who suffered ACL damage in September 2024, was named the tournament's best player, winning the Golden Ball ahead of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé. His leadership was instrumental as Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final.
"I just want the new generations to see my example as an opportunity. When you go down, you can rise again," Rodri stated.
The victory also saw Spain set a new international football record, extending their unbeaten run to 38 matches. Rodri credited the team's maturation since their Euro victory two years prior.
This marks Spain's second men's World Cup title. The squad displayed exceptional defensive discipline, conceding only one goal throughout the entire tournament while maintaining their possession-based style.
