MELBOURNE, March 7 - George Russell claimed pole position for the Australian Grand Prix, outpacing Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli. Russell's lap was nearly eight-tenths of a second faster than third-place qualifier Isack Hadjar, demonstrating Mercedes' strong performance.

While Max Verstappen crashed out and Lando Norris expressed concerns about his McLaren, Russell was impressed by his car's capabilities. "I think we’ve got a really amazing car beneath us," Russell stated, noting the agility of the lighter, smaller cars compared to previous models. He described the new cars as more responsive, akin to a go-kart, a significant shift from the "bouncing bus" of last year.

Antonelli faces an investigation for an unsafe car release after his vehicle dropped cooling fans during qualifying, impacting Norris's McLaren. Despite the incident and extensive repairs needed after a crash in practice, Antonelli secured a front-row start. Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledged Antonelli's raw speed and talent but cautioned against immediate championship comparisons with the more experienced Russell.
