The Los Angeles Rams shocked the NFL by selecting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick in the 2026 Draft. Head coach Sean McVay told FS1’s “The Herd” the decision was months in the making, not a sudden move.
“There wasn't that a-ha moment, it was a combination of the work,” McVay said. “We'll welcome Ty into the building with open arms, but let's not get it twisted. We're trying to win right now.”
Simpson started only one season at Alabama, throwing for 3,567 yards, 30 total touchdowns, and five interceptions. He led the Crimson Tide to the College Football Playoff under head coach Kalen DeBoer.
McVay emphasized keeping reigning MVP Matthew Stafford informed throughout the process, calling the 38-year-old “a total stud” for handling the situation. Stafford threw for 4,707 yards and 46 touchdowns last season, leading the Rams to the NFC Championship. The team is reportedly discussing an extension, but McVay acknowledged Stafford’s commitment is year-to-year.
Simpson will compete with Stetson Bennett for the backup role this season.
