Jorrit Bergsma, at 40 years old, has secured his second Olympic speed skating gold medal in Milan. The Dutch athlete claimed victory in the men's mass start, stunning competitors with a daring strategy.
Bergsma, along with Denmark's Viktor Hald Thorup, established a significant lead early in the race. With a few laps remaining, Bergsma launched a decisive move, breaking away from Thorup to clinch the win.
"I do not think I realise just yet what I have done. I even had to pinch myself when I was standing on the podium," Bergsma stated, reflecting on his unexpected triumph.
This gold medal adds to Bergsma's impressive Olympic record, which includes a 10,000m gold from Sochi 2014 and multiple other medals. Despite the challenges of competing against younger athletes, Bergsma expressed his determination, saying, "I will see year by year, but I am not done yet."
His victory on February 21st held personal significance, as he raced with helmet number 13, a number he considers lucky. This win mirrors his bronze medal performance on February 13th and aligns with his marathon skating traditions.
