England Test captain Ben Stokes is evaluating his leadership future amid an ongoing investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The probe stems from a nightclub incident that occurred in the early hours of Monday, shortly after England’s victory over New Zealand at Lord’s.
The ECB confirmed on Monday that Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson are under investigation. While specific details remain undisclosed, reports indicate Stokes will meet with his advisors on Wednesday to determine his next steps.
This development recalls a 2017 incident outside a Bristol nightclub that resulted in an affray charge for Stokes. He subsequently missed the 2017-18 Ashes tour before being cleared. The current scrutiny follows broader concerns regarding player conduct during England’s recent 4-1 Ashes defeat, prompting ECB chief executive Richard Gould to implement stricter behavioral measures, including a midnight curfew earlier this year.
The second Test match against New Zealand is scheduled to begin on June 17 at The Oval.
