President Trump's Department of Education (ED) has warned San Jose State University (SJSU) that it faces 'impending enforcement action' for failing to comply with Title IX. The university is being urged to separate male and female athletes, restrict access to facilities, and restore titles to female athletes.
SJSU and the California State University system sued the ED in March to challenge an investigation that found the school violated Title IX by allowing a biological male to compete on the women’s volleyball teams from 2022 to 2024. The ED claims the athlete was instructed not to disclose his sex to female players and that he caused injuries during matches.
Former SJSU player Brooke Slusser alleged she lived with the athlete without knowing his birth sex and that coaches encouraged the arrangement. Other athletes reported injuries from the player's powerful spikes. Several teams forfeited games to SJSU in protest.
The ED has given SJSU 10 days to resolve the issue or risk losing federal funding. SJSU previously settled a Title IX violation in 2021 over sexual harassment allegations.
