Sami Khedira is returning to Real Madrid, transitioning from a decorated midfield career to the coaching staff. The 39-year-old former German international is finalizing a deal to become an assistant coach under José Mourinho.

This marks Khedira's first senior coaching appointment since he retired from professional football in 2021. The reunion brings together two figures who shared five seasons together at the Bernabéu, beginning when both arrived in the summer of 2010.

The appointment is reported as a done deal, with an anticipated start date around July 13, 2026. Khedira will join a coaching bench that is also expected to include João Tralhão and Pedro Machado, former colleagues of Mourinho from his time at Benfica.

The World Cup winner moves directly into an elite role at one of the world’s biggest clubs despite having no prior senior coaching experience. Beyond his tenure in Madrid, his playing career included a 2014 World Cup victory with Germany and Serie A titles with Juventus.
