Spain midfielder Fermín López is out of the World Cup after fracturing a bone in his right foot during a Spanish league match against Real Betis.

The 23-year-old Barcelona player will undergo surgery. Barcelona says López fractured the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot. No timeline for recovery has been given, but he is not expected to be fit in time for Spain's World Cup debut against Cape Verde on June 15 in Atlanta.

López was part of Spain's 2024 European Championship-winning squad and the under-23 team that won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he scored six goals, including two in the final against host France.
