Szymon Marciniak has been selected to referee Argentina’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Algeria on June 16 at Kansas City Stadium.

The Polish official gained global recognition for presiding over the dramatic 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France, followed by the 2023 UEFA Champions League final. His assignment signals FIFA’s intent to deploy its most experienced officials in high-stakes early fixtures.

Marciniak will be joined by an all-Polish officiating crew comprising assistants Tomasz Listkiewicz and Adam Kupsik. The announcement was made on June 13, providing both squads with three days' notice before kickoff.

This tournament marks a significant shift as the first expanded World Cup featuring 48 teams. Historically, defending champions have struggled in their opening matches, citing examples such as France in 2002, Spain in 2010, and Germany in 2018. Marciniak’s proven ability to manage chaotic narratives makes him a critical asset for this marquee matchup.
