Singapore is set to build 50 multipurpose courts for badminton and pickleball within the next five years, according to Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth David Neo. Eight dual-use courts are already operational, with more to follow. This initiative addresses increased demand for public sports facilities amidst a growing trend of active lifestyles.
The new courts are part of the Sports Facilities Master Plan (SFMP), which aims to improve access to quality and affordable sports amenities. Regional sports centers in Queenstown, Hougang, and Punggol are also slated for completion within the year.
The Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) is increasing collaboration with Sport Singapore and the Ministry of Education to expand sports opportunities for students. A S$10 million grant will encourage the formation of Multi-School Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) teams to foster greater participation and social mixing through sports.
Additionally, MCCY is launching Sport Excellence Singapore (SpexSG), consolidating key sports development entities to provide more integrated and seamless support for national athletes. This move aims to enhance athlete-centric support, strengthen partnerships with National Sports Associations, and deepen specialist capabilities, ultimately optimizing resources and improving the high-performance sport system.
